Nairobi Steps Up Flood Preparedness Ahead of Expected El Niño Rains

Nairobi County has stepped up preparations ahead of expected heavy rains, with the county government working alongside national agencies to strengthen flood prevention and emergency response measures.

Governor Johnson Sakaja on Monday chaired a multi-agency meeting at the Kenya Railways headquarters to assess ongoing mitigation efforts and enhance the city's preparedness ahead of the expected wet conditions.

The rains are forecast to persist from October through February, raising concerns over possible flooding in areas that have previously experienced significant disruption during periods of heavy rainfall.

The meeting brought together representatives from the Kenya Red Cross, Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA), disaster management teams and other agencies involved in flood preparedness.

Drainage Works Underway

Governor Sakaja said drainage improvement and flood-control works were already underway in several flood-prone parts of the capital.

Areas along Mombasa Road are among those receiving attention, with various government agencies expected to undertake interventions within their respective mandates.

The county government has also established an emergency response centre and dedicated communication channels through which residents can report flooding and other emergencies.

Rescue centres have been identified in preparation for possible evacuations should flooding force residents from their homes.

Residents in High-Risk Areas Urged to Move

Sakaja said some residents living in riparian areas had already relocated to safer locations but urged those remaining in high-risk zones to take evacuation advisories seriously.

The Governor said the priority was to prevent loss of life as the city prepares for potentially severe weather conditions.

"We don't want to lose lives. The lives we have so far lost should not recur. Let's listen to government messaging and what to do," Sakaja said.

He stressed that authorities were seeking to act before flooding occurs rather than waiting for emergencies to develop.

"We are preparing early because we know what is coming. We have brought together all the agencies that have a role to play so that when the rains come, we are not responding in isolation but as one coordinated team," he said.

Green Army Continues Drainage Clearing

County Green Army teams are continuing to clear and unclog drainage systems across the city as part of efforts to improve water flow and reduce the risk of flooding.

The exercise is aimed at removing accumulated waste and other obstructions from drainage channels before the rains intensify.

Authorities are also encouraging residents to play their part by avoiding dumping waste in drainage systems and taking precautionary measures in areas vulnerable to flooding.

Nairobi Braces for Potential Flooding

Nairobi has experienced serious flooding during previous periods of heavy rainfall, with floodwaters disrupting transport, displacing residents and damaging homes, businesses and public infrastructure.

The latest preparations are therefore focused on strengthening coordination between government agencies while ensuring emergency teams are ready to respond quickly to incidents.

Sakaja said cooperation between residents and government agencies would be critical, particularly in flood-prone and riparian areas.

Residents have been urged to monitor official weather and government advisories, take early precautions and respond promptly to evacuation instructions where necessary.

With the expected rains approaching, authorities say early preparation and coordinated action will be critical in reducing the potential impact of flooding across Nairobi.
