Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah Mourns Sister, Retired Teacher Mary Goretti Wamukoya

BUSIA, KENYA — Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah is mourning the death of his sister, Mary Goretti Wamukoya, a retired teacher who passed away on August 21 at Mater Hospital in Nairobi following a long illness.

Omtatah announced the death in a tribute shared on X, describing Wamukoya as a woman of strength, kindness and wisdom who was deeply devoted to her family.

In his message, the senator extended his condolences to the Musita and Okoiti families, asking for strength and comfort for those affected by her death.

Omtatah also drew on scripture to honour his sister's life and legacy, citing the words from 2 Timothy about having fought the good fight and kept the faith.

Family Mourns Retired Educator

Wamukoya was born in 1958 and was married to Fanuel Musita of Bungoma County. She was the daughter of the late Patrick Okoiti and Wilhemina Okoiti.

She is survived by five children: David Musita, who is based in Sweden; Patrick Musita, a doctor at Kitale County Hospital; Inviolata Musita of Kocholya; and Consolata and Albert Musita, who are both based in Nairobi.

She is also survived by 11 grandchildren and several siblings.

Family members described in the funeral announcement include Regina Kalasinga, Petronilla Okoiti, Valerie Okoiti, Catherine Okoiti, Kizito Okoiti, Bernard Okoiti, Isidore Okoiti, Theresea Okoiti, Lucy Okoiti and Magdalene Amanya.

Burial Plans

According to a funeral announcement circulated by the family, Wamukoya's body is currently lying at Delights Funeral Home in Bungoma.

The cortege is scheduled to leave the funeral home on Saturday, September 5, ahead of her burial at Kabula in Bungoma County.

Her death has prompted messages of condolence to the Omtatah, Musita and Okoiti families as relatives, friends and former colleagues prepare to bid farewell to the retired educator.

Wamukoya's family remembers her as a woman whose life was defined by service, family and faith.
