MOROGORO, TANZANIA — The East African Development Bank (EADB) has committed KSh11.6 million to support the 23rd Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) Games currently underway in Morogoro, Tanzania.

The regional school sports competition has attracted 413 teams and 5,548 participants, who are competing across 51 sporting disciplines, making this year's event one of the largest secondary school sports competitions in East Africa.

Speaking during the official opening ceremony, EADB Tanzania Country Manager Stephen Wambura said the bank's sponsorship is part of its commitment to nurturing young talent and promoting the role of sport in building healthier and more resilient communities.

Wambura said EADB's development mandate extends beyond financing infrastructure and businesses to include investments in people, particularly young people who will shape the region's future.

“While our core mandate is financing development projects across key sectors of the economy, we recognize that sustainable development goes beyond infrastructure and enterprises. It also means investing in people, especially young people, who represent the future of our region,” Wambura said.

He said the bank had partnered with FEASSA as the title sponsor and committed USD 90,000 towards the successful hosting of the 23rd edition.

EADB Backs Youth Development Through Sport

Wambura said sports sponsorship remains an important pillar of EADB's Corporate Social Initiatives (CSI) programme because of the role sport plays in character development, healthy living and creating opportunities for young people.

“Through this sponsorship, we are investing not only in the competition, but in the development of the next generation of East African leaders,” he added.

The sponsorship will help finance the production of medals and trophies, as well as playing kits for teams participating in the finals.

Kenya Fields 1,704 Participants

Defending champions Kenya have arrived in Tanzania with one of the largest contingents at the games, comprising 125 teams and 1,704 participants competing in more than 40 disciplines.

Kenya will be seeking to retain the overall championship title after emerging victorious at last year's games in Kakamega.

The Kenyan contingent will be banking on strong performances in football, volleyball, rugby and basketball as it seeks to maintain its dominance in the regional competition.

In boys' football, Kakamega School and St Mary's Yala will lead Kenya's campaign, while St Joseph's Girls Kitale and Nyakach Girls will represent the country in the girls' competition.

Kenya's Volleyball and Rugby Campaign

National volleyball champions Kesogon Girls will represent Kenya alongside Soweto Academy and Mwitoti Secondary School.

In the boys' volleyball competition, Kenya will be represented by Chesamis Boys, Matiliku Secondary School and Chepsaita Secondary School.

In rugby 15s, Kenya's representatives include Kisii School, Upper Hill School and St Mary's Yala.

The country's sevens campaign will feature Butula Boys, Cardinal Otunga Mosocho and Bokoli Boys.

Basketball Teams Join Title Defence

Kenya's basketball campaign will see Lukenya School and Friends School Kamusinga compete in the boys' 5x5 category.

In the girls' competition, Kaya Tiwi and Butere Girls will carry Kenya's hopes.

The FEASSA Games bring together secondary school athletes from across East Africa, with Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi also fielding teams for the competition.

The games are scheduled to conclude on August 22, when the overall champion will be crowned.

Kenya will be aiming to successfully defend its title against strong regional competition as EADB's sponsorship highlights the growing role of sport in supporting youth development and regional integration.
