NAIROBI — The Indian High Commission in Kenya on Saturday, August 15, marked India's 80th Independence Day with a colourful celebration bringing together members of the Indian diaspora, Kenyan guests and other invited attendees.

The celebrations, held at India House, were led by India's High Commissioner to Kenya, Dr Ardash Swaika, and featured a showcase of Indian culture through traditional dances, attire, cuisine and music.

The event also provided an opportunity to reflect on India's development and the country's progress over the decades.

‘Vande Mataram’ Takes Centre Stage

This year's celebrations coincided with the 150th anniversary of “Vande Mataram,” India's National Song.

Artists performed the song during the event before leading a mass rendition involving guests and members of the Indian community.

An exhibition was also mounted to highlight the history of “Vande Mataram” and its significance in India's national story.

India Highlights Seven Pillars of National Strength

During the celebrations, Dr Swaika read excerpts from speeches delivered by Indian President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting India's achievements and development trajectory.

He also referenced Prime Minister Modi's Independence Day address, which outlined “Shakti Ki Saptadhara,” or the seven streams of national strength that are expected to drive India's future development.

The seven areas include manufacturing; agriculture and food production; technology and innovation; modern infrastructure and connectivity; defence and national security; the green and blue economies; and India's soft power.

India's soft power encompasses areas such as yoga, culture, tourism, cinema and digital content.

High Commissioner Praises Women's Economic Progress

Dr Swaika also highlighted the growing economic participation of women in India, expressing pride in the increasing number of women achieving financial independence and creating employment opportunities.

He noted that women were increasingly entering sectors traditionally considered male-dominated and succeeding in them.

The High Commissioner said the development reflected the changing role of women in India's economy and society.

India-Kenya Relations

Dr Swaika also praised the longstanding relationship between Kenya and India, particularly in the areas of trade and healthcare.

He said the ties between the two countries had existed for many years and expressed confidence that the relationship would continue to grow stronger.

The celebrations further showcased the diversity of India's diaspora in Kenya, with cultural performances representing different Indian traditions and communities.

Painting competitions were also held to engage young people and members of the wider community, giving participants an opportunity to explore India's history while expressing their perspectives on the country's future.

The event underscored the deep cultural connections within India's diaspora in Kenya while highlighting the country's development ambitions and its longstanding partnership with Kenya.
