India Firecracker Factory Explosion Kills 11, Including Eight Children

KAUSHAMBI, INDIA — At least 11 people, including eight children, have been killed after a powerful explosion at a firecracker factory in northern India, police said Monday.

The blast occurred in Kaushambi district in Uttar Pradesh state, causing several nearby houses to collapse, according to local media reports. Most of the victims were reportedly residents of the affected homes.

The children killed in the explosion were aged between four and 13, according to the Hindustan Times.

Police officer Satnarayan Prajapat confirmed the deaths and said several other people were injured in the incident. Emergency teams were deployed to the area as authorities responded to the destruction caused by the blast.

Cause of Explosion Unknown

Authorities had not immediately established what caused the explosion. Investigations are expected to focus on the factory's operations, the storage and handling of fireworks materials, and compliance with safety requirements.

The force of the blast reportedly damaged or brought down nearby structures, raising concerns about the safety of residential areas located close to fireworks manufacturing facilities.

Repeated Fireworks Accidents

The incident adds to a series of deadly accidents involving fireworks facilities in India.

Industrial accidents remain a recurring concern in parts of the country, with authorities and safety experts frequently pointing to inadequate safety measures, poor compliance with regulations and weak enforcement as contributing factors.

In March, a fire at a fireworks factory in western India killed 17 people.

A month later, eight people were killed after a fire broke out at a firecracker storage facility in southern India.

The latest tragedy is expected to renew scrutiny of safety standards surrounding India's fireworks industry, particularly where factories and storage facilities operate near residential communities.
