At least eight people have died and seven others sustained critical injuries in a tragic road traffic accident along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway near Katumani. The collision involved a bus and a matatu and occurred on Friday night.
Emergency Response and Casualties
Emergency teams from Muumandu and Kyumbi quickly responded to the scene, carrying out rescue and evacuation operations. Authorities confirmed that six passengers died instantly due to the impact, while two more succumbed to their injuries on Saturday during treatment.
Seven critically injured victims were transported to Machakos Level 5 Hospital, where they are receiving specialised medical care.
Ongoing Investigations
Rescue operations at the scene have concluded. Police and other relevant agencies are now focusing on traffic management and conducting investigations to determine the cause of the accident.
Traffic along the busy highway was temporarily disrupted as emergency crews cleared the wreckage.
