Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has publicly addressed ongoing speculation surrounding his political loyalty, particularly his perceived shift toward Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
Speaking during a radio interview on October 8, 2025, Owino dismissed claims of defecting from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), asserting that his close association with Kalonzo is personal and not politically motivated.
“If Raila and Kalonzo communicate, what is wrong when I communicate with Kalonzo?” he questioned, emphasizing that his interactions with Kalonzo should not be construed as rebellion within ODM.
Owino reiterated that his political allegiance remains intact, despite what he described as unfair criticism for engaging with Kalonzo—a former Azimio principal and now a leading opposition figure.
The MP’s remarks follow Wiper’s recent endorsement of Kalonzo as the preferred presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto in 2027. Owino, who is widely expected to contest the Nairobi gubernatorial seat under the Wiper banner, also hinted at growing support for Kalonzo across the opposition.
He used the opportunity to commend Kalonzo’s loyalty to ODM leader Raila Odinga during the last general election and drew parallels between the upcoming 2027 Kenyan elections and the 2020 U.S. election, where voters mobilized to remove then-President Donald Trump.
“In 2020, Americans didn’t come out to vote for Biden—they came out to vote out Trump. The same will happen in 2027,” Owino stated.
With political realignments already taking shape, Owino’s comments shed light on the complex dynamics within Kenya’s opposition and signal the beginning of what promises to be a heated lead-up to the 2027 elections.
