Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has downplayed the possibility of a united opposition unseating President William Ruto in the 2027 elections.

Speaking on a local TV station on Thursday, September 25, 2025, Cherargei insisted that even with heavyweight figures such as Kalonzo Musyoka or former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i in the race, Ruto would still prevail—especially with the backing of Raila Odinga.

“Bring Kalonzo Musyoka, bring Matiang’i, bring whoever you want. President Ruto will sweep them aside with Raila Odinga’s support,” Cherargei declared.

The senator argued that Kenya’s opposition is fragmented and lacks a clear agenda beyond opposing the government.

His remarks came a day after a new TIFA survey suggested that Raila Odinga’s political influence will remain decisive in shaping the 2027 contest. According to the poll, 32% of Kenyans believe Raila will support Ruto’s re-election, while 39% expect him to rejoin the opposition—either as a candidate himself (22%) or by backing another contender (17%).

The findings highlight Raila’s pivotal role, with expectations of his 2027 stance sharply divided along political lines.

Cherargei’s comments underscore growing speculation over whether Odinga will side with Ruto or rally the opposition, a factor that could define Kenya’s next presidential race.
