China has officially confirmed that citizens of Canada and the United Kingdom will be able to visit the country visa-free starting Tuesday, following agreements reached during recent visits by both nations’ leaders to Beijing.
Diplomatic Progress
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney traveled to Beijing in January, seeking to strengthen ties with China and recalibrate relations amid shifting dynamics with the United States. Both leaders hailed progress after meetings with President Xi Jinping, including the landmark visa-free arrangement.
Policy Details
China’s foreign ministry announced on Sunday that holders of ordinary Canadian and British passports can enter the country without a visa for business, tourism, family visits, exchanges, or transit. The exemption allows stays of up to 30 days and will remain in effect until December 31, 2026.
Facilitating Exchanges
Officials described the move as part of broader efforts to “further facilitate people-to-people exchanges between China and other countries.” The policy underscores Beijing’s push to expand international engagement and foster closer cultural and economic ties.
