China has issued a stark warning to the United States over the growing use of artificial intelligence in military operations, cautioning that unchecked deployment of the technology could lead to a dystopian scenario similar to that depicted in the science-fiction film The Terminator.
The warning comes amid an escalating global debate about the ethical and strategic implications of AI-driven warfare.
Beijing Raises Concerns Over Military AI
A spokesperson for China’s defence ministry, Jiang Bin, said the unrestricted use of artificial intelligence by the U.S. military could erode accountability in warfare and create serious risks for global security.
According to Jiang, allowing algorithms to influence battlefield decisions or determine life-and-death outcomes could undermine ethical restraints in conflict and trigger a dangerous technological arms race.
“A dystopia depicted in the American film The Terminator could one day come true,” Jiang warned, referring to the 1984 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger that portrays a future dominated by AI-controlled machines battling humanity.
US Expands Military AI Integration
The concerns arise as the administration of Donald Trump pushes to integrate advanced AI systems into U.S. defense operations. Reports indicate the United States Department of Defense has approved the use of the AI system Grok, developed by Elon Musk’s company xAI, within classified environments.
At the same time, the Pentagon has moved to blacklist the AI firm Anthropic after it refused to allow its model Claude AI to be used for mass surveillance or fully autonomous lethal weapons.
Dispute With AI Company Escalates
The standoff between the Pentagon and Anthropic highlights growing tensions between governments seeking military advantages through AI and technology companies concerned about ethical limits.
Anthropic has argued that its technology should not be deployed for autonomous weapons systems or large-scale surveillance. U.S. officials, however, maintain that national defense policies cannot be dictated by private technology firms and that the military must retain flexibility in how it uses advanced technologies.
The dispute intensified when U.S. authorities designated Anthropic a national-security supply-chain risk and ordered federal agencies to stop using its AI tools, while giving the Pentagon a transition period to phase them out.
Global Debate on AI Warfare
The controversy reflects a broader global debate over the role of artificial intelligence in warfare. Analysts warn that rapid adoption of AI-driven military systems could accelerate an international arms race in autonomous weapons and decision-making technologies.
China has called for international cooperation and stronger governance frameworks to ensure AI remains under human control and does not undermine global security or humanitarian norms.
As major powers continue investing heavily in AI-enabled defense systems, policymakers and technology leaders face increasing pressure to balance innovation with ethical safeguards in the evolving landscape of modern warfare.
