Mombasa, Kenya – Coast Regional Police Commander Ali Nuno has authorised officers to use firearms against the notorious Panga Boys gang, which has been terrorising residents and businesses with violent robberies.
Speaking to the press, Nuno issued a stern warning to criminals operating across Mombasa, Kilifi, and Kwale counties, declaring that police will not hesitate to use firearms when justified.
“All those men and ladies involved in crime for one reason or another, your days are numbered. Crime doesn’t pay. You have two options: desist and accept salvation or move out of the entire Coast region. Where we are justified to use our firearms, we will not hesitate,” Nuno said.
He added in Kiswahili:
“Nikikupata na panga ukiumiza mtu, nakupiga risasi, hatutacheka na mtu. These are lethal weapons capable of killing. Nimepeana amri ya kutosha, maafisa watumie silaha yao na hao vijana waangushwe.”
Rising Concern Over Violent Robberies
The remarks come amid growing public concern over violent robberies along the Coast, where gangs have targeted shops, pedestrians, and homes. CCTV footage circulating online shows attackers wielding pangas and firearms storming businesses in Mtwapa and Bondo, leaving victims injured and traumatised.
Recent Arrests in Kwale
Police in Kwale County recently apprehended four suspected members of the gang following a violent robbery in Mbuwani Village on January 22, 2026.
The suspects allegedly attacked a man with pangas, stealing his mobile phone and inflicting deep cuts to his head and hand. Officers recovered four pangas and six mobile phones believed to be stolen.
National Police Service Response
Following the attack, the National Police Service (NPS) assured the public that operations have been intensified to dismantle organised criminal gangs and restore safety along the Coast.
Authorities say the crackdown is part of a broader strategy to protect communities and businesses from escalating gang violence, with emphasis on decisive action against offenders.
Conclusion
The Coast region has witnessed a surge in violent robberies, prompting police to adopt tougher measures against criminal gangs. With Commander Nuno’s directive authorising the use of firearms, security agencies are signalling a zero-tolerance approach to organised crime, aiming to restore peace and safety for residents and businesses.
