Nairobi, Kenya – The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has officially distanced itself from activist Oketch Salah’s recent activities, even as he released a passionate statement pledging unwavering loyalty to the party and its late leader, Raila Odinga.
In a statement signed by National Chairperson Gladys Wanga, ODM clarified that Salah’s actions do not represent the party’s official position.
“The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) wishes to clarify that any activities, statements, or engagements undertaken by Mr Oketch Salah are carried out strictly in his personal capacity and do not represent or bind the Orange Democratic Movement in any way,” Wanga stated.
She emphasized that all official ODM activities must go through proper channels under the guidance of Party Leader Dr. Oburu Odinga.
Party’s Warning on Unauthorized Activities
Wanga further cautioned grassroots leaders, members, and supporters against unauthorized engagements.
“No activities should be organised or conducted in the name of ODM without prior consultation and approval from the Party leadership and the Secretariat,” she said, stressing the party’s commitment to order, discipline, and structured engagement.
Salah’s Response: Loyalty and Apology
In what appeared to be a direct response, Salah issued his own statement reaffirming his loyalty to ODM and Raila Odinga’s legacy.
“Everything I have been doing has only one purpose: to popularize and strengthen ODM. I believe deeply in this party, in its history, and in what it stands for,” Salah said.
He offered an apology to Chairperson Wanga, noting:
“If, in that process, I have hurt you, Chairlady Wanga, I sincerely apologize. That was never my intention.”
Vision for ODM’s Future
Despite the apology, Salah defended his vision for revitalizing the party.
“ODM needs to be re-energised and refreshed. A living movement must keep moving, keep inspiring, and keep reaching the people, especially at the grassroots,” he stated.
He also emphasized his financial independence, clarifying that he has been using his personal resources to support ODM activities.
Commitment to Raila Odinga’s Legacy
Salah revealed a personal promise made to Raila Odinga, which continues to drive his loyalty.
“I promised Baba that I would stand with ODM. I made that promise when we were in India. That promise has stayed with me,” he disclosed.
He concluded defiantly:
“I remain ODM. I believe in ODM. And I will continue to stand with ODM out of love for the party and out of respect for Baba.”
Conclusion
The public exchange highlights growing tensions within ODM over grassroots engagement and the direction of party activities. While the leadership under Wanga insists on structured, approved programmes, Salah maintains his right to independently support the party, citing loyalty, personal resources, and respect for Raila Odinga’s legacy.
