The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has dismissed claims of foul play in the death of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo, concluding that he died as a result of a road traffic accident.

In a statement issued on Monday, the DCI said investigators carried out a comprehensive inquiry to establish the circumstances surrounding Jirongo’s death, including interrogating individuals who were with him in the hours leading up to the incident.

Jirongo, aged 64, died in the early hours of December 13, 2025, following a head-on collision involving his vehicle and a Climax Coach bus along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway. He was reportedly driving to his rural home in Lugari at the time of the accident.

As part of the investigation, detectives recorded statements from key witnesses, including his wife, Ann Lanoi Pertet, the bus driver Tiras Kamau Githinji, and the bus conductor Manoah Ekokwa Alukoya Olasi. Officers also questioned staff at Eagol Petrol Station, where Jirongo’s vehicle was captured on CCTV making a U-turn shortly before the crash.

Several political leaders who were last seen with Jirongo at Karen Oasis restaurant on December 12, 2025 including National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, and politicians Rebman Malala and Ibrahim Sambuli voluntarily recorded statements to assist with the inquiry.

In addition, seven passengers from the bus involved in the collision presented themselves to investigators, and their statements were formally documented.

A multi-agency team processed the accident scene, secured and preserved key exhibits, documented physical evidence, and retrieved CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station for forensic analysis. Investigators also obtained the bus manifest and reviewed amateur videos recorded at the scene.

Based on the totality of evidence collected, the DCI concluded that the incident was a traffic accident with no indication of criminal involvement or foul play.

The investigation file will be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for further direction once the remaining procedural steps are completed.

Jirongo was laid to rest on December 30, 2025, at his family homestead in Lumakanda, Kakamega County, alongside his parents.

The DCI has urged members of the public and political leaders to exercise restraint and avoid speculative commentary that could mislead the public or undermine confidence in investigative processes.
