The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has issued a clarification dismissing reports that one of its officers died at its Nairobi Headquarters.
Clarification on False Reports
In a statement shared on Monday, February 23, 2026, the agency confirmed the death of Corporal James Muiruri Mburu, who was attached to the DCI Kajiado North Sub County.
“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations deeply regrets the tragic and untimely death of one of our own, Corporal James Muiruri Mburu. He passed away on February 21, 2026,” the statement read.
The DCI emphasized that contrary to claims circulating online, Corporal Muiruri did not collapse or die at DCI Headquarters.
Incident in Ngong
According to the agency, the officer was found unresponsive in his kitchen garden in Ngong by a neighbor’s house help, who immediately raised the alarm. Three fellow officers responded swiftly and rushed him to Ngong Level IV Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The matter was formally reported at Ngong Police Station under OB No. 38/21/02/2026.
Preliminary Findings
Crime Scene Investigation officers, working alongside personnel from the Kenya Power and Lighting Company, documented the scene and identified a live electrical wire beneath the garden surface. Preliminary findings suggest that Corporal Muiruri may have been electrocuted while tilling the land.
A postmortem examination has been scheduled to establish the exact cause of death.
Appeal for Calm
The DCI urged members of the public to refrain from speculation and allow the family privacy during this period of mourning.
“As investigations continue, we respectfully urge the public to refrain from speculation and to allow the family the privacy and dignity they deserve as they grieve this immense loss,” the agency stated.
Condolences
The DCI extended condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late officer, describing him as a dedicated servant of the nation whose passing has deeply affected the entire fraternity.
