The General Teaching and Referral Hospital (CGTRH) in Mombasa has suspended its Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Iqbal Khandwalla, citing concerns over his conduct and performance while in office.

Board Decision

In a statement released Sunday by the County Secretary & Head of County Public Service, officials confirmed that the hospital’s board reached the decision during a special sitting convened to address operational challenges affecting public confidence.

“The Board noted with concern a sustained deterioration in institutional governance climate and stakeholder relations affecting the Hospital’s leadership interface with the community it serves, and general members of the public,” the statement read.

The board emphasized the hospital’s critical role in the county health system and the need to preserve institutional stability and credibility.

Acting Leadership

Pending a full governance review, Dr. Sood Mohamed has been appointed as acting CEO. The County Government assured residents that the hospital remains fully operational, with all clinical services, emergency care, and programs continuing as scheduled.

County Government Commitment

The statement further underscored Mombasa’s commitment to strengthening governance, accountability, and public confidence across all county health institutions. Updates will be provided upon conclusion of the governance process.

Conclusion

The suspension of Dr. Khandwalla marks a significant step in addressing governance challenges at one of Mombasa’s most important health facilities. With an acting CEO now in place, the county leadership aims to restore confidence and ensure uninterrupted delivery of essential medical services.
