Machakos, Kenya – The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has successfully reclaimed public land worth Ksh.50 million in Machakos town following a court ruling in its favour.

The recovered land comprises two parcels adjacent to the Machakos Law Courts, forming part of the grabbed land identified as LR No. 909/536.

Land Reserved for Public Use

Originally, the parcels had been reserved for the Ministry of Health to provide institutional housing and host House No. MACH/HOUSE/HG.14, classified as a pool house. The house is currently occupied by the sub-county police commander.

According to David Too, EACC Director of Legal Services and Asset Recovery, the judgment represents a significant step in safeguarding public assets from illegal acquisition.

“This ruling underscores our commitment to protecting public property and ensuring it serves the intended purpose,” Too said.

He further confirmed that an adjacent parcel of land valued at Ksh.20 million had also been recovered through voluntary surrender.

Investigations and Findings

The Commission said it had investigated allegations of illegal alienation of land carved out of government premises. Findings revealed irregular leasing and attempts to privatize land meant for public institutions.

Too emphasized that reclaiming such assets is central to EACC’s mandate of protecting public resources and curbing economic crimes.

Conclusion

The recovery of the Machakos parcels adds to a growing list of public assets reclaimed by EACC across the country. As land remains one of the most contested resources in Kenya, the ruling highlights the importance of vigilance and legal enforcement in protecting public property from illegal acquisition.
