Leaders from Embu County have come out strongly against Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, condemning his recent remarks about the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga as reckless, insensitive, and unbecoming of a public leader.

Led by Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, the leaders criticised Kahiga for disrespecting a national figure whose contribution to Kenya’s democracy and unity remains widely recognised. Mbarire urged all leaders to exercise empathy and restraint, especially during a period of national mourning.

“Even if you did not support someone politically, it is only humane to mourn with those who are grieving or simply remain silent,” Mbarire stated. “That is why, as governors, we have resolved to remove him from his position as Vice-Chair of the Council of Governors (CoG).”

Kahiga’s controversial remarks, made during a burial in Nyeri, implied that Raila Odinga’s death had altered political plans that might have marginalised the Mt. Kenya region. The comments have since drawn widespread outrage, with leaders and citizens across the country demanding accountability and decency from public officials.

Governor Mbarire stressed that such statements only serve to deepen divisions at a time when the nation should be united in mourning and reflection. She reminded leaders that true leadership is grounded in empathy, respect, and emotional intelligence.

Supporting her sentiments, Ruguru Ngandori MCA Muturi Mwombo described Kahiga’s remarks as “reckless and unrepresentative” of the views of Mt. Kenya residents.

“Those were his personal views—not the position of Mt. Kenya leaders or locals,” Mwombo asserted. “We stand with the family of the late Raila Odinga and the people of Nyanza as they mourn their beloved son.”

He added that the late opposition leader’s passing should have been met with national solidarity, not divisive rhetoric.

“Words can heal or hurt. In this case, Kahiga’s words have hurt a grieving nation still coming to terms with the loss of a statesman,” Mwombo said.

However, the MCA cautioned against rushing into impeachment proceedings against Kahiga, warning that it could plunge Nyeri County into unnecessary political turmoil. He instead urged the governor to use this moment to reflect deeply on his conduct and the responsibilities of leadership.
