Former Chief Justice David Maraga has officially joined the 2027 presidential race, announcing his candidature under the United Green Movement (UGM) Party.

The party confirmed the move on Thursday, October 2, 2025, stating:

“The UGM Party has today officially welcomed Hon. David Maraga as a founding member and the party’s presidential flag bearer.”

From Judiciary to Politics

Maraga, who served as Kenya’s Chief Justice from 2016 to 2021, is making a bold transition from judicial leadership to political leadership. His entry is expected to shake up the political landscape as he becomes the latest high-profile figure to declare interest in succeeding President William Ruto.

Appeal to the Youth

Even before his official declaration, Maraga had hinted at his political ambitions by urging young people to take charge of the country’s future through active electoral participation.

“The future belongs to you, and you must take charge of deciding how that future looks through the upcoming elections,” he previously said.

By positioning himself as a champion of youth issues and governance reforms, Maraga is expected to anchor much of his campaign around mobilising Kenya’s largest voting bloc.

A Boost for UGM

For the UGM Party, which has previously struggled to command national attention, Maraga’s decision to run on its ticket is seen as a major boost. His candidacy offers the party visibility and credibility while giving him a platform to articulate his vision for the country.

Looking Ahead

Maraga now joins a growing list of presidential aspirants already preparing for the 2027 General Election, marking the beginning of what promises to be a highly competitive race. His entry not only adds weight to the contest but also introduces new dynamics in Kenya’s evolving political arena.
