Pep Guardiola admitted that Manchester City’s wasteful finishing proved costly after they were held to a 0–0 draw by Sunderland on Thursday, a result that dealt a significant blow to their Premier League title ambitions.
City delivered an uneven performance at the Stadium of Light, creating numerous scoring opportunities but failing to convert them. The dropped points allowed Arsenal to strengthen their grip at the top of the table, extending their lead in the title race.
Second-half misses from Savinho and Josko Gvardiol proved particularly costly, coming at a time when City had begun to build momentum against a disciplined and physically imposing Sunderland side.
The reigning champions now sit four points behind league leaders Arsenal. A victory would have reduced the gap to two points at the halfway stage of the season.
“The amount of chances we missed in the six-yard box clear chances we could not convert,” Guardiola said after the match. “We created enough opportunities. We didn’t do what we planned in the first half, but we played much better in the second.”
Guardiola highlighted several missed chances involving Savinho, Jeremy Doku, Gvardiol, Phil Foden, and Erling Haaland, expressing frustration at his side’s inability to capitalise.
“The commitment and desire were there in the second half, but unfortunately we couldn’t take advantage,” he added.
Title Hopes Dented
The draw brought an end to City’s eight-match winning streak across all competitions and further underlined the challenge of playing Sunderland at home. The Black Cats remain unbeaten in 10 league matches at the Stadium of Light since their promotion from the Championship last season.
Guardiola acknowledged the disappointment within his squad but urged his players to quickly refocus ahead of a crucial clash against Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
“Sunderland are very physical and strong, so the result is not a surprise,” he said. “The players are a bit heads down, but we have to lift ourselves. In three days, we have another very difficult game.”
Rodri’s Return Provides Encouragement
City showed marked improvement after Rodri was introduced at half-time. The influential midfielder made his first appearance since early November, having previously featured briefly against Bournemouth.
Guardiola praised Rodri’s impact, noting his importance to City’s ability to control games.
“In the first half, we struggled against their pressing,” Guardiola said. “In the second half, Rodri helped us break the lines and move the ball quicker. We could run and play better.”
With Arsenal setting the pace at the top, keeping Rodri fit and available on a regular basis could prove crucial if City are to mount a sustained title challenge in the second half of the season.
