Israeli security authorities have issued a public warning about attempts by Iranian intelligence agencies to recruit Israeli citizens through online platforms, raising concerns over cyber espionage and national security.
In a joint statement released Thursday, the Shin Bet Israel’s domestic intelligence service and the Israel Police cautioned citizens against engaging with suspicious individuals online who may be linked to Iranian intelligence networks.
Increasing Online Recruitment Attempts
According to the statement, Iranian operatives have increasingly used social media and other online channels over the past year to approach Israeli citizens. Authorities say the objective of these contacts is to recruit individuals to carry out intelligence-gathering tasks.
These activities reportedly include collecting information on strategic locations, key individuals, and critical infrastructure within Israel.
Security officials emphasized that such recruitment attempts have continued even during the ongoing military confrontation between the two countries.
Security Agencies Urge Public Vigilance
“The Shin Bet and the Israel Police reiterate their warning to the public against maintaining contact with Iranian intelligence elements online and carrying out security-related tasks at their direction,” the statement said.
Authorities warned that individuals who engage with foreign intelligence operatives risk violating national security laws and could face criminal prosecution.
Investigations and Arrests Underway
Israeli security agencies confirmed that they are actively monitoring and investigating cases linked to suspected Iranian intelligence recruitment.
Since the escalation of military operations earlier this week, the agencies say they have already uncovered 16 security-related cases involving Israeli citizens suspected of maintaining contact with Iranian operatives.
Officials said several arrests have already been made as part of efforts to prevent intelligence leaks and protect sensitive national assets.
Rising Tensions in the Region
The warning comes amid rapidly rising tensions between Israel and Iran following a series of military strikes that have intensified the regional security crisis.
The escalating confrontation has raised concerns among international observers about the potential expansion of the conflict beyond the two countries, particularly as cyber and intelligence operations increasingly accompany conventional military actions.
