President and Chief Executive of the Africa Policy Institute, Prof. Peter Kagwanja, has firmly stated that the Jubilee Party is part of Kenya’s broad-based government, not the opposition.
In a brief message on his official X account on Friday, October 3, 2025, Kagwanja wrote: “Jubilee is squarely in the broad-based Government!” The post accompanied a clip from his interview with a local television station.
Jubilee’s Role in Government
During the interview, the renowned political commentator explained that Jubilee’s influence is already embedded in President William Ruto’s administration. He pointed out that the party’s leaders are serving in various government capacities, playing a role in shaping national affairs.
According to Kagwanja, Jubilee’s hesitation to openly declare its alignment with government stems from political sentiments in the Mt Kenya region, where the party once commanded a dominant following.
“Sometimes the truth has been brought forward irrespective of how painful it is. Jubilee is part of the broad-based government,” Kagwanja noted.
His remarks have reignited debate in Mt Kenya, with questions arising over Jubilee’s true political standing and the future of its grassroots support.
Kinuthia Backs Kagwanja
Political analyst Fanya Mambo Kinuthia, who joined Kagwanja on the panel, echoed the same view. He observed that just like Jubilee, the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) is also struggling to maintain ground in Mt Kenya.
Kinuthia further argued that emerging outfits such as the Democracy for Citizens’ Party are gaining momentum and could potentially outpace both Jubilee and UDA in future by-elections.
“William Ruto is pretty sure that his UDA Party, just like Jubilee, is dead in the Mt Kenya region. The mountain moved long ago,” he remarked.
What Lies Ahead for Mt Kenya?
The statements by Kagwanja and Kinuthia underscore the uncertain political trajectory of the Mt Kenya region as the country heads toward the 2027 General Election. Once Jubilee’s stronghold, the region is now viewed as a volatile battleground where shifting voter loyalties may redefine Kenya’s next political chapter.
