Nairobi, Kenya – The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development has announced subsidised maize seed prices for the upcoming planting season, reinforcing the government’s commitment to national food security.

In a statement on Thursday, March 12, Principal Secretary Dr. Kipronoh Ronoh said the government has allocated Ksh.2 billion for the 2025/2026 financial year to make high-quality maize seeds more affordable to farmers nationwide.

“This initiative is aimed at empowering smallholder farmers, enhancing productivity, and ensuring stable food supplies across the country,” Dr. Ronoh said.

Subsidised Seed Prices

The Ministry set the new prices as follows:

  • 1 Kilogram – Ksh. 250
  • 2 Kilograms – Ksh. 500
  • 10 Kilograms – Ksh. 2,500
  • 25 Kilograms – Ksh. 6,000

These adjustments are effective immediately and are expected to reduce the financial burden on farmers during the planting season.

Collaboration for Effective Distribution

Dr. Ronoh called on seed distributors and farmers to adhere to the new pricing framework to ensure equitable access and to maximize the impact of the subsidy program.

The Ministry also urged all stakeholders to work together to guarantee the efficient distribution of subsidised seeds, aiming to strengthen Kenya’s agricultural sector and support broader national development goals.
