Kenya and Somalia’s often fragile diplomatic relations are once again under strain following a controversial incident during last weekend’s CAF Champions League clash between Kenya Police FC and Mogadishu City FC at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi.

Viral videos captured a group of Mogadishu City FC supporters mocking and desecrating the Kenyan flag, sparking outrage across the country. In one clip, fans were seen kicking and rubbing the flag in a manner many Kenyans described as a blatant act of disrespect. Another video showed a Somali supporter snatching a Kenyan flag from a local fan before tossing it to the ground.

The scenes quickly ignited anger both in the stadium and on social media. Prominent voices, including sports journalist Tony Kwalanda, condemned the acts, while others stressed that such behavior does not represent the wider Somali community.

Government Response

Kenya’s Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has ordered the arrest, prosecution, and deportation of those involved. He emphasized that symbols of national unity such as the flag must be safeguarded, warning that those who undermine them forfeit the privilege of residing in Kenya.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja confirmed that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has been directed to act swiftly. Desecrating the flag is a criminal offence under Kenyan law, punishable by fines or imprisonment.

Somalia’s Reaction

Somalia’s Ambassador to Kenya, Jabril Ibrahim Abdulle, condemned the incident, calling it regrettable and unrepresentative of the Somali people. He assured that Somali authorities are investigating and may take further action.

A History of Tense Relations

The diplomatic row has revived memories of the long, complex history between the two nations. Disputes trace back to the 1960s, when Somali nationalists laid claim to Kenya’s Northern Frontier District. This led to the Shifta War (1963–1967), a violent secessionist conflict that left lasting scars.

Though the war ended decades ago, relations remain delicate. Kenya continues to play a role in stabilizing Somalia, even as incidents like the Nyayo Stadium flag desecration risk reopening old wounds.
