Somalia’s ambassador to Kenya, Jabril Ibrahim Abdulle, has strongly condemned the actions of a group of youths who were filmed desecrating the Kenyan flag during last weekend’s CAF Champions League preliminary match between Kenya Police FC and Mogadishu City Club at Nyayo Stadium.
Speaking in Nairobi on Wednesday, Ambassador Abdulle described the behavior as “regrettable,” stressing that the incident does not represent the values of friendship and mutual respect that define Kenya-Somalia relations. He noted that investigations are underway and assured that appropriate measures will be taken.
“Such incidents do not reflect the values of respect, friendship, and shared sovereignty that guide the relationship between the two countries,” he said.
The viral videos sparked outrage among Kenyans, with calls for authorities to act against those involved. Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen also weighed in, emphasizing that desecration of national symbols is a criminal offense under the National Flag, Emblems and Names Act.
“I urge the Inspector General of Police to ensure the law takes its course,” Murkomen said while addressing a security forum in Wajir.
Kenya Police FC won the tie 3–1 against Mogadishu City Club, but the diplomatic fallout from the off-pitch incident has overshadowed the sporting contest.
