PYONGYANG — North Korea has released a new state photograph showing leader Kim Jong Un’s teenage daughter, Kim Ju Ae, firing a pistol at a munitions facility, renewing speculation that she may be being groomed as a potential successor to the country’s leadership.

The image, released Thursday by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), comes just weeks after photographs circulated showing the teenager shooting a rifle during another public appearance.

Appearance at Key State Event

Ju Ae recently featured prominently in official images marking the closing stages of a major congress of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea. Her repeated appearances at significant state functions have increasingly drawn attention from analysts who believe the regime may be positioning her as a future leader.

The latest photograph shows Ju Ae firing what appears to be a pistol with one eye closed, with flames visible from the muzzle of the weapon. She attended the event alongside her father at what state media described as a “major munitions factory” producing new pistols and other portable light arms.

Images released by KCNA show Kim Jong Un and his daughter wearing matching leather jackets, a style often associated with authority and power in the country’s political symbolism, as officials briefed them during an inspection of the facility.

Weapons Demonstration

During the visit, Kim Jong Un reportedly entered the factory’s shooting gallery to test a newly developed pistol. State media said the leader expressed satisfaction with the weapon, praising its “excellence.”

The public display of Ju Ae participating in activities linked to the military and weapons development has drawn attention from regional experts studying leadership dynamics in the highly secretive state.

Cultivation of Leadership Image

According to Lim Eul-chul, a North Korea expert at Kyungnam University in South Korea, the imagery appears designed to shape public perceptions of Ju Ae as a strong and capable future leader.

“It appears the regime is trying to cultivate the image of a strong and formidable woman,” Lim said,

Adding that the pistol-shooting scene signals that she is being portrayed with the attributes expected of a military commander.

Dynastic Rule in North Korea

The Kim family has ruled North Korea for decades under a tightly controlled political system built around the cult of personality surrounding the so-called “Paektu bloodline.” Leadership succession within the family has historically played a central role in maintaining the regime’s continuity.

Ju Ae first gained global attention in 2022 when she accompanied her father to an intercontinental ballistic missile launch, marking her first public appearance.

Before that event, her existence had only been publicly referenced by former NBA star Dennis Rodman, who visited North Korea in 2013 and later confirmed meeting the leader’s family.

While North Korea has not formally identified Ju Ae as the future heir, her increasingly prominent role in state media coverage continues to fuel speculation among analysts and foreign observers about the long-term succession plans within the ruling Kim dynasty.
