The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has confirmed the death of an examiner during the ongoing Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) marking exercise in Makueni County.

In a statement dated Monday, November 24, 2025, KNEC announced that Mr. Nicodemus Mutua Mutuku, who was serving as a team leader for the Creative Arts and Sports paper, passed away at Machakos Girls’ High School while actively performing his duties.

“It is with profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of one of our examiners for the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA). Mr. Nicodemus Mutua Mutuku passed away this morning at Machakos Girls High School, where he was a team leader in the Creative Arts and Sports paper,” the statement read.

Mr. Mutuku had been leading the marking exercise since its commencement on November 7, 2025, demonstrating unwavering dedication throughout. KNEC highlighted his long-standing service as an examiner, noting that he previously worked on the now-defunct Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations before transitioning to the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system.

A respected educator at Nduluni Junior School in Makindu Sub-County, Makueni County, Mr. Mutuku was remembered by KNEC as a diligent and committed professional. “He was an experienced, diligent teacher, and we have, indeed, lost a gem. We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to Mr. Mutuku’s family, friends, loved ones, and fellow examiners,” the authority added.

KNEC’s statement pays tribute to Mr. Mutuku’s dedication to education and his invaluable contribution to national examinations over the years, marking a significant loss for both the teaching community and the examinations council.
