Italian fashion designer Valentino Garavani, widely celebrated as one of the icons of 20th-century haute couture, has passed away at the age of 93. Valentino, co-founder of the eponymous Valentino fashion house in 1960, was renowned for his luxurious, elegant, and timeless creations, which graced celebrities and public figures such as Elizabeth Taylor, Nancy Reagan, Sharon Stone, Julia Roberts, and Gwyneth Paltrow.

In a statement posted on Instagram, the Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti Foundation said: “He passed away peacefully in his Roman home, surrounded by the love of his family.” The foundation announced that Valentino will lie in state at Piazza Mignanelli between 21 and 22 January, with a funeral service to follow at the Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels and Martyrs.

Born in Lombardy in May 1932, Valentino trained in Paris at the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne at the age of 17. He honed his craft working with prestigious houses, including Jacques Fath, Balenciaga, Jean Dessès, and Guy Laroche. He became synonymous with glamour, opulence, and sophisticated design, introducing his signature “Valentino red” following a trip to Spain. This bold hue became a defining feature of the brand, most memorably showcased in his 2007 final collection where all models wore red for the grand finale.

In December 2023, Valentino received the Outstanding Achievement Award at the British Fashion Awards, recognizing his lasting influence on global fashion. Alexandra Shulman, former editor-in-chief of British Vogue, described Valentino as someone who “epitomised glamour and luxury” and highlighted his enduring dedication to creating beautiful, coveted gowns rather than chasing fleeting trends.

Valentino’s legacy was further cemented through his long-standing relationships with high-profile clients, from Jacqueline Kennedy to contemporary Hollywood stars like Gwyneth Paltrow, Nicole Kidman, and Jennifer Lopez. His designs, particularly for the red carpet, became synonymous with elegance and spectacle, capturing the imagination of fashion enthusiasts worldwide.

As the fashion world mourns the loss of one of its true luminaries, Valentino Garavani leaves behind a timeless legacy defined by luxury, refinement, and a unique ability to make every wearer feel extraordinary.
