Maharashtra, India – Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra Ajit Pawar was killed along with four others on Wednesday morning after their chartered aircraft crashed while attempting to land at Baramati airport, officials confirmed.
The 66-year-old Pawar, a towering figure in Maharashtra politics and a key player in India’s financial hub Mumbai, was travelling aboard a Bombardier Learjet 45 operated by VSR Aviation. According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Pawar was accompanied by his personal security officer, an assistant, and two crew members when the aircraft went down in an open field at approximately 8:30 am (0300 GMT).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Pawar in a post on X, describing him as a “leader of the people” whose death was both “shocking and saddening.”
“Shri Ajit Pawar Ji was a leader of the people… with a strong grassroots level connect. He was widely respected and hardworking. His understanding of administrative matters and passion for empowering the poor and downtrodden were also noteworthy,” Modi said.
