Former Chief Justice David Maraga has hinted at the possibility of a united opposition front in the run-up to the 2027 General Election, saying talks among like-minded leaders are underway to consolidate support and mount a strong challenge against President William Ruto.
Opposition Unity Talks
Speaking during a tour of Kathonzweni in Makueni County, Maraga said consultations will determine who among opposition figures is best placed to carry the flag in 2027. He emphasized that the opposition shares a common goal of ensuring Ruto serves only one term.
Criticism of Government
Maraga accused the President of failing to decisively tackle corruption, arguing that mismanagement of public resources has weakened institutions and eroded public confidence in governance. He pledged that, if elected, his administration would prioritize:
- A stronger fight against corruption
- Enhanced oversight mechanisms
- Greater accountability in public expenditure
Call to Youth Participation
The former CJ urged Generation Z and other young Kenyans to register as voters in large numbers, stressing that youth participation will be decisive in shaping the country’s political future.
Warning Against Political Intolerance
Maraga also condemned recent incidents of chaos at opposition rallies, alleging that the disruptions were state-sponsored. He warned that continued political intolerance could destabilize the country if not addressed.
