Detectives in Kilimani are investigating the suspicious death of 54-year-old Zaituni Kavaya, a mother of three from Kibera, who died while working in an apartment on Mpunga Road.

Kavaya, who had been contracted for laundry duties, was reported dead after a phone call from Kilimani Police Station reached her daughter, Faith, asking her to report to the station. Upon arrival, Faith was informed that her mother had died, allegedly after falling from the fifth floor of the building.

Police have since arrested five suspects from a Sudanese family linked to the incident. Court documents suggest the case stemmed from a dispute over missing money. The household’s son claimed cash had disappeared from trousers Kavaya washed, leading to a confrontation. Defense lawyers argue that she attempted to flee when accused, resulting in her fall.

However, Kavaya’s family disputes this version, insisting she was unfairly recalled to the apartment after finishing work. “She left home healthy, and I expected her to come back safe,” Faith lamented, adding that her mother’s belongings contained only Ksh.160 and a few personal effects.

A postmortem examination revealed that Kavaya died from multiple blunt force injuries, raising more questions about the circumstances of her death.

Her grieving family is now demanding truth and justice, urging authorities to hold those responsible accountable. “There is no way foreigners should be killing our people here in Kenya. Where do we run to if this continues?” a relative stated.

The suspects remain in custody at Kilimani Police Station as investigations continue.
