The family of Benedict Kabiru, a Kenyan police officer who went missing during an ambush in Haiti six months ago, is demanding answers after President William Ruto confirmed his death during a high-level meeting in New York.

President Ruto announced that Kabiru, alongside officers Samuel Kitwai and Kennedy Nzuve, had lost their lives in the line of duty. The news came as a devastating blow to Kabiru’s family, who had held onto hope after months of uncertainty.

His mother, Jecinta Kabiru, broke down upon hearing the announcement, questioning why the government kept the family in the dark for so long. “Why are they torturing me? I urge them to bring the remains of my son so I can give him a proper burial,” she said.

Kabiru’s brother, Phillip Kamau, echoed the family’s frustration, accusing the government of failing to provide timely and transparent information.

The late officer was the sole breadwinner for his young daughter, and his disappearance has deeply disrupted the family’s future. His daughter’s education plans have been put on hold due to financial struggles.

The family has sued the government, seeking clarity on Kabiru’s fate and demanding the repatriation of his remains. The case is scheduled for hearing at the Milimani Law Courts on Wednesday.

For Kabiru’s loved ones, closure can only come with the truth — and the return of his body for a dignified farewell.
