Kenya’s National Assembly has approved the appointment of Mama Ida Odinga as the country’s ambassador to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), marking a significant diplomatic milestone.

Lawmakers Praise Ida’s Appointment

During the debate, legislators expressed confidence in Ida’s ability to represent Kenya effectively at the international organisation. Both Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wa and Minority Leader Junet Mohammed lauded her contributions to the nation and defended her appointment against critics.

“I have no doubt that she will be able to leverage her diplomatic credentials, teaching experience, and the social capital she has built over the years. Mama Ida Odinga is not an ordinary figure in this country or the world,” said Ichung’wa.

Junet Mohammed criticised those opposing her appointment, urging Kenyans to embrace opportunities to serve their country rather than disparage others.

Additional Appointment

The National Assembly also approved the appointment of Francis Meja as Chairperson of the Public Service Commission, reinforcing the government’s commitment to strengthening public institutions.

Significance

Ida Odinga’s appointment underscores Kenya’s focus on environmental diplomacy and its role within UNEP, headquartered in Nairobi. Lawmakers highlighted her experience and influence as assets in advancing Kenya’s environmental agenda on the global stage.
