The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has issued a stern warning to 107 bars, clubs, and restaurants across Kenya, citing persistent noise pollution complaints from the public.
In a notice released yesterday, NEMA revealed that the majority of the affected establishments had already been served with Environmental Restoration Orders but failed to provide the required compliance documents. “Several facilities have been issued orders requiring them to provide environmental compliance documents, but the majority have failed to comply,” the authority stated.
Among the popular venues flagged are 1824, Paris Lounge, Havana Lounge, Quiver Lounge (Eastlands and Kilimani), Cool Breeze Bar in Ruiru, Lang’ata’s Al Fhakeer, Kettle House, and Club Ibiza. Restaurants such as Alaska Lounge and Grill, Funcity Hotel, Mchana Restaurant, Kijito Gardens, and Mamba Village are also on the list.
The establishments have been ordered to submit key documents within seven days, including:
- Certificate of incorporation and list of directors
- Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) license
- Current Environmental Audit report
- Proof of noise control measures
- Written justification against closure or legal action
Failure to comply will result in prosecution, closure, or other legal consequences.
NEMA’s crackdown comes ahead of World Cleanup Day 2025 and coincides with the authority’s wider campaigns against textile waste and environmental hazards. Operators have been directed to present their documentation at NEMA’s headquarters in Nairobi within the stipulated timeframe.
This decisive move underscores NEMA’s commitment to curbing noise pollution, which has risen by 15% in urban areas such as Nairobi and Mombasa over the past year, disrupting the peace of surrounding communities.
