Nine people were injured one critically after a race car veered off track and rammed into spectators during a motorsport event in southeastern Australia, authorities have confirmed.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening in Walcha, a small town located approximately 300 kilometres north of Sydney. According to New South Wales Police, the vehicle was participating in an organised race when it lost control, broke through a safety barrier, and ploughed into a group of bystanders.
A 54-year-old man sustained life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to hospital in critical condition. Three additional victims were reported to be seriously injured, while others suffered varying degrees of harm. Police noted that the injured individuals range in age from 20 to 75.
Footage circulated by local media captured the horrific moment the car slammed through the fence at high speed, sending spectators scrambling for safety.
Investigators say the crash occurred moments after the driver was involved in an on-track collision, though the circumstances leading to the loss of control remain under review.
Authorities are continuing to examine the scene, with event organisers expected to assist in the ongoing investigation.
