The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has suspended the licences of 62 public service vehicle (PSV) drivers from six transport companies after a compliance assessment revealed widespread safety violations.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, December 9, the Authority confirmed that the suspended drivers must undergo mandatory retesting before their licences can be reinstated.
“This action follows a compliance assessment that revealed multiple violations and serious safety concerns,” NTSA stated.
Transport Operators Affected
The suspension affects drivers from the following transport companies:
- Tahmeed Express Limited – 23 drivers
- Latema Travelers Bus and Safari Company Limited – 13 drivers
- Meru Nissan Operators Sacco – 10 drivers
- Moline Prestige Services Shuttle Limited – 6 drivers
- MTrans Sacco Limited – 7 drivers
- Enabled Mashariki Investment Limited – 3 drivers
NTSA noted that the violations ranged from non-compliance with safety protocols to operational gaps that posed risks to passengers and other road users.
Mandatory Retesting and Safety Training
Beyond the immediate licence suspensions, NTSA has ordered the affected operators to conduct comprehensive road safety awareness training for all their drivers. Additionally, selected vehicles under these companies must undergo inspection to verify roadworthiness.
“The driver re-testing exercise is part of broader proactive measures aimed at ensuring every driver possesses the requisite skills and competencies to safely operate on our roads,” the Authority said.
Ongoing Scrutiny of Public Transport Sector
NTSA also disclosed that several other public transport operators remain under review as part of intensified enforcement efforts targeting compliance with road safety standards.
“These actions highlight our firm and ongoing commitment to road safety, particularly during this festive season,” the statement concluded.
The crackdown comes at a time when road traffic increases significantly, and authorities are urging both operators and passengers to prioritize safety in order to reduce accidents and fatalities during the holiday period.
