A night of celebration at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania turned tragic on Saturday, October 25, 2025, when gunfire broke out during outdoor homecoming festivities, leaving one person dead and six others injured.

According to Chester County District Attorney Christopher de Barrena-Sarobe, authorities have detained one individual who was armed at the scene. Investigators are examining whether there may have been additional shooters, though officials said there is no ongoing threat to the campus community.

“We don’t have many answers about exactly what happened,” said District Attorney de Barrena-Sarobe during a Sunday morning briefing. “However, we are not treating this as an incident where someone intentionally came in to inflict mass harm on the campus.”

The shooting occurred around 9:30 p.m. near the International Cultural Center, where students, alumni, and guests had gathered for tailgating and social activities following a homecoming football game.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with people fleeing in panic as shots rang out. Authorities have called on anyone with video footage or information about the incident to contact investigators or the FBI, which is assisting local and state police in the probe.

Officials have not yet released details about the victims or the conditions of those injured, who are being treated at nearby hospitals.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said he had been briefed on the situation and assured the university of the state’s full support.

“Join Lori and me in praying for the Lincoln University community,” Shapiro posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Lincoln University Police Chief Marc Partee expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, saying the event had devastated the campus on what was meant to be a day of joy and pride.

“If there were a stronger word than ‘devastated,’ I’d use it,” Partee said. “This was supposed to be a day to celebrate our legacy now it’s one we’ll never forget for all the wrong reasons.”

The historically Black university, located about 45 miles southwest of Philadelphia, has suspended all homecoming events as the investigation continues.
