The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a weather alert warning residents of the coastal region to prepare for heavy rains and strong winds starting Monday, October 27, 2025, as a weakening low-pressure system over the Indian Ocean approaches the East African coastline.
In a statement released on Sunday, October 26, 2025, KMD said it is closely monitoring Tropical Storm Chenge, which continues to move slowly westward across the northern Mozambique Channel.
“Heavy rainfall is expected over several parts of the country, with strong winds exceeding 25 knots possible along the south coast on Monday and Tuesday as the system dissipates,” the Met Department said.
Although the storm has weakened, its proximity to the Kenya-Tanzania coast could still significantly affect local weather patterns early in the week. Chenge, located about 500 kilometres north of Madagascar, is expected to dissipate near the Tanzania–Kenya coastline by Tuesday, bringing bouts of intense rainfall and coastal winds exceeding 25 knots.
Initially forming as a low-pressure area over the southwest Indian Ocean, Chenge has sustained winds of around 55 kilometres per hour, with gusts reaching up to 75 kilometres per hour as it drifts toward the East African coast.
The weatherman has urged residents and marine operators to remain cautious, follow official weather updates, and take necessary safety measures. Fishermen and other marine users along the Indian Ocean have been particularly warned of rough seas and strong gusts that could pose navigational risks.
KMD further noted that while Mayotte will not be placed under a cyclone alert, it may still experience swells of up to two metres between Sunday and Monday.
The alert specifically warns residents in Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Malindi counties to brace for heavy downpours and strong coastal winds, with a heightened risk of flooding in low-lying and poorly drained areas.
Inland regions bordering the coast including Kwale, Taita Taveta, and Tana River counties are also expected to experience localized flooding and heavy rainfall as the storm’s remnants move inland over the coming days.
