A 21-year-old man from Mbande Village in Malava Constituency, Kakamega County, is receiving treatment at Webuye General Hospital after being shot by police during a violent confrontation with mourners.
The incident occurred when a group of mourners reportedly attempted to transport the body of their relative to the home of a local resident suspected of being involved in the murder of 23-year-old Douglas Lutta, who was killed two weeks ago under brutal circumstances.
According to Malava OCPD Suleiman Majondo, police were tipped off that the mourners intended to storm the suspect’s compound. Officers were deployed to the scene to contain the situation, but when they tried to stop the group, the mourners allegedly began pelting them with stones.
In response, the police opened fire, injuring one person who was later rushed to hospital for treatment.
Authorities have since launched an investigation into the incident to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the events that led to the confrontation.
