On December 31, Burkina Faso’s President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, delivered his annual New Year’s address, striking an optimistic tone as he reflected on the country’s progress in 2025 and outlined strategic priorities for 2026. The speech emphasized significant improvements in national security, a landmark achievement in agricultural self-sufficiency, and an assertive vision for sovereignty-driven development.
Significant Advances in National Security
At the core of the president’s address was the notable progress achieved through Operation Lalmassga, meaning “Ice Wall.” President Traoré credited this large-scale military operation with enabling the Burkinabe armed forces to reclaim dozens of localities that had previously fallen under terrorist control. Key areas mentioned included the Nakambé region, zones surrounding the Kompienga Dam, Namungu in Gulmu, and Namsiguia near Djibo and Toulfé.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustaining military pressure, stating that operations would continue up to Burkina Faso’s national borders to prevent any resurgence of armed groups. President Traoré commended both the national armed forces and the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP) for their decisive role in restoring territorial integrity and reinforcing local security.
Humanitarian Recovery and Resettlement Efforts
Improved security conditions have translated into tangible humanitarian gains. According to the president, thousands of internally displaced persons have been able to return to their communities. These returning populations have received targeted support, including assistance to resume agricultural production and access to newly constructed infrastructure designed to stabilize livelihoods and encourage long-term resettlement.
Agriculture and the Milestone of Food Self-Sufficiency
Agriculture featured prominently as one of the government’s most significant achievements. President Traoré announced that Burkina Faso attained food self-sufficiency in 2025, a milestone he attributed to coordinated agricultural campaigns, the distribution of improved seeds, farmer subsidies, and expanded mechanization.
Looking ahead to 2026, the government plans to deepen these efforts through expanded land development, enhanced water retention and irrigation projects, increased aquaculture initiatives, and the production of fodder crops to support livestock and pastoral communities.
Mining, Social Sectors, and Infrastructure Development
Beyond security and agriculture, the president addressed reforms across several strategic sectors. In mining, he reiterated the state’s determination to reassert control over mineral resources to ensure that national wealth benefits the broader population.
In education, President Traoré highlighted investments in technical and vocational training as a means of aligning skills development with economic needs. Health sector priorities include strengthening medical facilities and improving access to care across the country.
Infrastructure development remains a central pillar of the government’s agenda. Plans include the establishment of additional road construction brigades and a gradual shift toward high-rise urban planning to better manage urban growth and land use.
Sovereignty and National Values
Concluding his address, President Traoré reaffirmed Burkina Faso’s commitment to a sovereign foreign policy. He stated that the country remains open to international partnerships founded on mutual respect and non-interference, while firmly rejecting external pressures that undermine national independence.
He closed with an appeal to shared national values integrity, dignity, and patriotism calling on citizens to support the emergence of a new Burkina Faso grounded in transparency, unity, and development-oriented governance.
