Siaya County, Kenya — Deputy Governor Dr. William Oduol has officially declared his intention to contest for the governorship of Siaya County in the 2027 General Election, setting up a high-stakes battle against his current boss, Governor James Orengo.

Dr. Oduol made the announcement during a fellowship with religious leaders from across Alego Usonga Constituency at his rural residence in Hawinga Village. He confirmed that he will seek the ODM party ticket, signaling that the contest will start at the party nomination level.

“I would like to state that today I have officially declared my candidacy for Governor of Siaya County on an ODM ticket. I’m presenting myself for nominations and thereafter offer myself to contest against the rest of the other candidates. I’m going to contest in the ODM nominations, hopefully with James Orengo, na mimi nangoja yeye,” Dr. Oduol said.

The Deputy Governor, who has largely operated outside his official role for the past three and a half years following a fallout with Governor Orengo, cited poor service delivery and unfulfilled promises as key reasons for his decision.

He stressed that the development manifesto presented to Siaya residents during the 2022 campaigns which he claims was largely his own brainchild remains largely unimplemented.

“The manifesto that we have in Siaya County was largely my manifesto. I actually developed it, and unfortunately that manifesto has not been implemented. I am therefore taking this opportunity and imploring the citizenry and residents of Siaya County to elect me in 2027 so that the new Siaya dream can be actualized, and the 9-point agenda in the manifesto can be implemented,” Dr. Oduol said.

Dr. Oduol argued that Siaya requires an administrator, not an activist or legislator, as county chief executive, pledging to focus on key areas such as health, food security, youth and women empowerment, among other priorities.

“I am committed to bringing meaningful transformation in the management of Siaya County. If elected, I will ensure that development is prioritized, and that the promise we made to residents is fulfilled,” he said.

With the Deputy Governor’s entry into the race, ODM members in Siaya County can expect a competitive nomination process, which will likely shape the political landscape ahead of the 2027 polls.
