Three employees of Qatar’s Amiri Diwan, the Gulf nation’s top government body, have died in a car accident near Egypt’s Red Sea resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh, the Qatari embassy in Egypt announced on Sunday. Two others were injured and are currently receiving medical care at a local hospital.
According to security sources, the vehicle carrying the officials overturned on a curve about 50 kilometers from Sharm el-Sheikh. The embassy confirmed that both the injured and the bodies of the deceased would be repatriated to Doha later in the day.
The tragic incident occurred just days after Qatari, Turkish, and Egyptian officials attended indirect talks in Sharm el-Sheikh that contributed to an agreement between Israel and Hamas on the initial phase of a U.S.-backed peace plan for Gaza. The city is also scheduled to host a global summit on Monday to advance discussions on finalizing the deal.
