Security has been significantly heightened at the Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Kisumu as preparations continue for the public viewing of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga’s body. Thousands of mourners began streaming into the venue early on Friday, October 18, 2025, where a strong multi-agency security presence ensured calm and order throughout the day.

According to live coverage, police and military officers were strategically deployed both inside and outside the stadium, underscoring the magnitude of the event. The security operation follows earlier appeals from national and county leaders urging residents of Kisumu and the larger Nyanza region to uphold peace and decorum during the solemn occasion.

Personnel from the National Youth Service (NYS) were stationed around the VIP dais, where Raila’s body would later be placed for public viewing. Meanwhile, the Kenya Police Service, Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), and other national security agencies maintained a visible presence across the stadium and surrounding access roads to manage the large crowds. Mounted police were also on standby to respond swiftly in case of disturbances or potential stampedes.

To complement the security efforts, emergency response teams established temporary stations throughout the venue. Ambulances from AAR, the Kisumu County Government, the Kenya Red Cross, and St. John Ambulance were strategically positioned around the stadium, with medical personnel ready to provide immediate assistance to mourners overwhelmed by emotion or fatigue.

Governor Nyong’o and Regional Commissioner Call for Calm

During a security and preparedness briefing held on Thursday, October 16, 2025, Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o and Nyanza Regional Commissioner Florah Mworoa appealed to residents to ensure a peaceful and dignified farewell for Raila Odinga.

“I want to take this opportunity to request the residents of Kisumu and the Nyanza region in general who will be here to receive the body of our fallen hero to be very peaceful,” said Commissioner Mworoa.

Governor Nyong’o echoed the sentiment, urging mourners to demonstrate their love and respect for Raila Odinga through unity and calm.
“The people of this region love peace; let that be proven on Saturday so that we don’t shame the distinguished guests or let down our party leader, Raila Amolo Odinga,” Nyong’o emphasized.

The enhanced security measures reflect both the national significance of Raila Odinga’s farewell and the immense public emotion surrounding the loss of a leader many regarded as the symbol of Kenya’s democratic struggle.
