The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kenya has confirmed the arrest of two individuals in Marsabit in connection with an illegal abortion.

According to a statement posted on X on Sunday, January 4, 2026, residents of Malkalakore village in Drib-Gombo discovered a lifeless six-month-old foetus wrapped in clothing and promptly alerted authorities. The swift response by law enforcement led to the identification of the woman believed to be the mother, who had been visibly pregnant just days prior.

During questioning, the woman admitted to being the mother, which prompted officers to trace the procedure to an unlicensed clinic. At the facility, investigators found the practitioner operating without proper registration. Surgical tools and assorted drugs, some stained with fresh blood, were seized, and the clinic was immediately shut down.

“The arrests came after disturbing reports from Malkalakore village in Drib-Gombo, where residents discovered a lifeless male foetus, estimated to be six months old, wrapped in clothing. Police swiftly responded, recovering the body and transferring it to the Marsabit Referral Mortuary for preservation,” the DCI said.

The woman received urgent medical attention at Marsabit Referral Hospital before being escorted to Marsabit Police Station, where both she and the unlicensed practitioner are currently being processed ahead of court arraignment.

Officials emphasised the importance of timely reporting, noting that early alerts can prevent medical complications and protect vulnerable individuals from unsafe procedures. The DCI urged the public to report suspicious medical activities via their toll-free line.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to cracking down on unlicensed clinics while ensuring that victims receive proper care and protection, reminding the public to seek certified medical services and remain vigilant against unregulated operations.

The foetus was recovered and preserved at Marsabit Referral Mortuary as investigations continue.
