The Ugandan National Police (UNP) has denied having custody of two missing Kenyan activists — Bob Njagi and Nicholas Oyoo — who disappeared in Kampala on October 1, 2025, while attending a political campaign event for opposition presidential aspirant Bobi Wine.

During a State of Security briefing on Monday, October 6, police spokesperson ACP Kituuma Rusoke said there were no official records indicating that the two activists were in police custody.

“I am not briefed by the police that we have them in our custody. So at the moment, I do not have any information to the effect that they are in police custody,” Rusoke told reporters.

He added that the police had not received any formal missing persons report, complicating efforts to launch a formal investigation.

“I also do not know whether it has been reported formally whether they are lost persons. I do not have that information,” he stated.

According to eyewitnesses, Njagi and Oyoo were abducted at gunpoint near a petrol station in Kireka township, just outside Kampala. Their phones were reportedly switched off shortly after the incident, and their whereabouts remain unknown.

The Kenyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs has since intervened, engaging Ugandan authorities to establish the activists’ status.

Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei confirmed that Kenya’s High Commission in Kampala had reached out to local security agencies and lodged a formal request for clarification with Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“The Kenyan Mission in Uganda has sought urgent assistance to determine the activists’ safety and whereabouts,” said Sing’oei, adding that both governments were in communication to facilitate their safe return.

The disappearance has raised diplomatic concern between Nairobi and Kampala, with human rights groups calling for a transparent investigation amid growing scrutiny of Uganda’s handling of opposition-linked incidents.
