The Embassy of the United States in Nigeria has issued a security alert warning of a possible terrorist threat targeting U.S. government facilities and American-affiliated schools in Nigeria.
In the advisory released on Tuesday, the embassy urged American citizens living in or visiting the country to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures as authorities monitor the evolving security situation.
Safety Measures for US Citizens
The embassy advised U.S. nationals to take practical safety precautions, including keeping mobile phones fully charged in case of emergencies and familiarising themselves with emergency exits when entering public buildings.
Despite the security warning, officials confirmed that consular services will continue operating normally at the embassy in Abuja and the U.S. consulate in Lagos.
The diplomatic mission also encouraged Americans in Nigeria to regularly check updates through its official communication channels and follow security guidance issued by the United States Department of State.
Travellers were further advised to consult the Nigeria country information page on the State Department’s website for updated security guidance.
Heightened Global Security Concerns
The alert comes amid heightened international tensions linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States.
The war, which began on February 28, 2026, has escalated rapidly, triggering military operations and raising concerns about broader regional instability.
Early in the conflict, joint U.S.-Israeli strikes reportedly killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. Days later, his son Mojtaba Khamenei was named as his successor.
Escalating Military Operations
Military operations have included coordinated air strikes targeting Iranian leadership, military infrastructure, and nuclear-related facilities. Several attacks have also struck industrial sites in Tehran, including oil storage and refining facilities.
In response, Iran has launched missile and drone attacks against Israel and U.S. military positions across the Gulf region.
According to reports, targets have included bases and strategic locations in Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates.
Ongoing Monitoring
The U.S. embassy said it continues to closely monitor developments and urged American citizens in Nigeria to stay informed and adhere to official security guidance.
Authorities stressed that heightened vigilance and preparedness remain essential as geopolitical tensions continue to evolve.
