Zambia’s political landscape was jolted on Tuesday after Mambwe Zimba, Secretary General of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), was arrested in Lusaka over a digitally altered image posted on Facebook.
The Controversial Image
The image, shared on a page called “Zambia for all 2026”, depicted President Hakainde Hichilema lying in a casket while Vice President Mutale Nalumango appeared to pay tribute. Authorities confirmed the image was fake and digitally manipulated.
There have been no indications from the press or government that President Hichilema’s health has deteriorated or that he has died.
Arrest and Investigation
According to Lusaka Times, preliminary investigations revealed that Zimba was one of the administrators of the Facebook page in question. The 44-year-old politician reportedly remains in police custody as inquiries continue.
Police began investigating the matter on Sunday after receiving reports about the altered picture. The arrest highlights growing concerns over misinformation and digital manipulation in Zambia’s political discourse.
Broader Context
The case underscores the challenges African governments face in balancing freedom of expression with efforts to curb fake news and disinformation. With elections approaching in several countries across the continent, authorities are increasingly sensitive to online content that could destabilize political environments.
