A woman has spoken out about feeling “violated” after discovering a hidden live-streaming camera inside a toilet cubicle at a Giggling Squid Thai restaurant in St Martin’s Square, Leicester, during a date night between Christmas and New Year.
The Discovery
The 32-year-old NHS worker and mother-of-one said she noticed something unusual after using the bathroom on December 30, 2025. Looking down, she spotted a small black lens under the toilet seat, partially concealed with kitchen roll.
“I turned around and I looked down, and I saw this black round dot it was a bit out of place because the toilet’s white. It was just there, a small camera, some wires coming off of it, and then a battery pack with a kitchen roll over it, and my stomach just sank,” she told the BBC.
The device was later confirmed to be connected to the internet, raising fears that footage could have been live-streamed.
Police Investigation
Leicestershire Police said they were notified the following day and recovered the device for examination. Officers reviewed CCTV footage from the restaurant and spoke to staff in an effort to identify the person responsible.
A police spokesperson added that advice had been given to staff about remaining vigilant. No arrests have yet been made.
Restaurant Response
A spokesperson for Giggling Restaurants, which operates the chain, said staff acted appropriately by immediately informing police.
“Our staff did the right thing and informed police right away, who now have the item in their possession. We are cooperating fully with their inquiries,” the company said.
Victim’s Appeal
The victim described the experience as deeply unsettling:
“It makes me feel sick I’ve tried to disassociate myself from it, but whoever has done that has won, they have that of me now.”
She urged the public to be more cautious in everyday situations:
“I’m trying to get people to think when they go in public situations, look everywhere, even in places that we wouldn’t even think would be unsafe. If this helps somebody spot it before it can escalate, then great.”
