A devastating attack in Pretoria, South Africa, has left 11 people dead, including a three-year-old child, after gunmen stormed a hostel reportedly operating an illegal alcohol outlet. The incident, which occurred in Saulsville township, 18 kilometers west of the capital, is the latest in a series of mass shootings that continue to plague the country.

According to police spokeswoman Athlenda Mathe, a total of 25 people were shot during the early-morning assault, with 14 taken to hospital for treatment. Ten victims died at the scene, while another succumbed to injuries in hospital. Among the deceased were a 12-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl.

The attack unfolded at around 4:30 a.m. (0230 GMT), when three armed men entered what police described as an “illegal shebeen” inside the hostel and opened fire indiscriminately at a group of patrons. Authorities confirmed that no arrests have yet been made, and a manhunt is ongoing to track down the perpetrators.

“This is a serious challenge for us,” Mathe said, highlighting that unlicensed liquor premises are frequent hotspots for mass shootings. “Innocent people often get caught up in the crossfire,” she added during remarks to public broadcaster SABC.

South Africa, Africa’s most industrialized nation, struggles with entrenched crime fueled by organized networks, gang violence, and widespread firearm circulation. While many citizens legally own guns for personal protection, the number of illegal weapons remains high. Between April and September, the country recorded an average of 63 murders per day, one of the highest rates globally, according to police data.

This latest tragedy follows a string of violent incidents across the country. In October, two teenagers were killed and five others injured in a gang-related shooting in Johannesburg. In May, gunmen killed eight patrons at a tavern in Durban, and last year, 18 family members were shot dead at a homestead in the Eastern Cape Province.

Police continue to investigate the Pretoria shooting, seeking to determine the motive behind the attack and bring the culprits to justice, while communities grapple with ongoing insecurity linked to illegal alcohol outlets and gang-related violence.
