A devastating fire tore through a popular nightclub in Goa’s Arpora area late Saturday night, claiming 25 lives and injuring six others, according to state authorities. The tragedy unfolded shortly after midnight at the Birch nightclub, a well-known entertainment venue in one of India’s most frequented tourist destinations.
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant confirmed the casualties on Sunday, describing the incident as one of the most painful moments in the state’s recent history. Among the victims were several tourists, though their nationalities have not been disclosed.
“Today is a very painful day for all of us. Twenty-five people have lost their lives and six are injured,” Sawant said in an official statement. He added that a magisterial inquiry had been ordered to determine the cause of the fire and establish accountability.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief, calling the loss of life “deeply saddening.”
Early reports indicate that a “fire show” held inside the club may have triggered the blaze. According to Goa Fire Chief Nitin V. Raiker, flames ignited the club’s wooden structures, causing smoke to rapidly engulf the building.
“Most people died due to suffocation in the basement and kitchen area,” Raiker told CNN News18. Video footage circulated by local media showed emergency responders carrying victims down a narrow staircase leading out of the club.
The nightclub was hosting a crowded party at the time of the fire, heightening the challenge for rescuers and contributing to the high casualty count.
Incidents of this nature are tragically common in India, where lax enforcement of building codes, overcrowding, and inadequate fire safety measures continue to pose significant risks. In recent months, several major fires have claimed lives across the country:
- In May, a blaze at a commercial building in Hyderabad killed at least 17 people.
- In April, a hotel fire in Kolkata left at least 15 dead as guests scrambled through windows and onto rooftops to escape.
- Last year, 24 people died when a fire swept through a crowded amusement arcade in Gujarat.
As investigations begin, the Goa tragedy has reignited national concerns over safety compliance in entertainment venues especially in regions heavily reliant on tourism. The state government has pledged a thorough review of the circumstances to ensure accountability and prevent future disasters.
