The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a temporary traffic disruption on a section of the Thika Superhighway at Kihunguro, affecting both the Nairobi-bound and Thika-bound service lanes.

In a public notice issued on Monday, October 13, 2025, KeNHA stated that the disruption will run from October 20 to December 20, 2025, to facilitate the construction of column bases and stub columns for the upcoming Kihunguro footbridge. The project aims to improve pedestrian safety along the busy highway.

“This is to allow for construction works of the Kihunguro footbridge column bases and stub columns at the section,” read the notice signed by Acting Director General Eng. Luka Kimeli.

Motorists have been urged to adhere to the proposed traffic management plan and follow directions from traffic marshals and police officers stationed at the site throughout the construction period.

According to the detailed traffic plan shared by KeNHA, vehicles heading towards Nairobi will be diverted off the affected service lane before the construction area, temporarily merging onto the main carriageway before rejoining the service lane past the site. Clear directional signage and safety barriers have been installed to guide motorists.

For Thika-bound traffic, vehicles will follow a similar detour, diverting from the service lane onto a temporary bypass that reconnects past the construction zone. Traffic marshals will be on-site to manage flow and assist with merging traffic.

KeNHA has also highlighted two fenced working zones on either side of the highway, designed to ensure the safety of construction workers and pedestrians. Designated crossing points have been provided further along the highway to prevent foot traffic near the active site.

The authority has assured road users that every effort is being made to minimize inconvenience while ensuring the timely completion of the Kihunguro footbridge project, a key addition to improving pedestrian mobility and safety on the Thika Superhighway.
